The Madison Police Department responded to a call at a hospital early Sunday morning after a 23-year-old man was stabbed downtown.
According to the police incident report, the victim, a West side resident, said he had been stabbed during a fight on State Street, off of West Gilman Street.
The victim required 10 stitches to close the wound on the back of his neck. The attending physician noted in the report that the victim was “lucky” as the weapon nearly hit his spinal cord.
Around 1 a.m., the victim and another man allegedly got into a fight. The victim, however, said he did not realize he had been stabbed nor did he recall seeing a weapon during the tussle.
The victim identified his assailant as a black male between 23 to 26 years old, MPD spokesperson Joel DeSpain said. He was approximately 6-foot-1, somewhere between 170 to 180 lbs, has short dark hair, no facial hair and no piercings or tattoos, DeSpain added.
DeSpain said MPD is not currently investigating the incident.
