Madison’s City Council has some new leadership following elections in a meeting Tuesday night.
Council members unanimously re-elected Ald. Chris Schmidt, District 11, as president of the council for a second year and Ald. Denise DeMarb, District 16, as president pro tem.
Although Schmidt was the only alder nominated to run for president of the council, this was not the case for DeMarb. DeMarb ran against Ald. Joseph Clausius, District 17, and Ald. Marsha Rummel, District 6, who were also nominated by their colleagues for the president pro tem position.
Ald. Scott Resnick, District 8, the previous president pro tem, did not run again for the position. Resnick is currently considering a mayoral run.
To be elected as president pro tem, alders needed at least 11 votes out of 20 from other council members.
DeMarb said her background in finance has assisted her with the work she does as a council member and what she will do as a council leader. She said she was interested in the position because of her concerns with city transportation, economic and comprehensive plans and the Judge Doyle Square project.
“I have the ability in my career experience to shepherd these plans, keeping City Council informed and ultimately delivering a good product that will inform our city for years,” DeMarb said.
Additionally, a new alder, Lucas Dailey, was sworn in for District 13. Ald. Sue Ellingson, District 13, stepped down from her position at City Council Tuesday night because of family reasons.
While some District 13 residents voiced concerns about Dailey as the new alder of the district because he has not lived in the neighborhood long, council members did not waver on their decision to elect him into this position.
City Council will meet again next Tuesday night.
