A mixture of street art, witty comments and trolls were regular fixtures on the chalkboards meant to aggregate community design input for the future reconstruction of Library Mall this summer.
Over the course of the summer, principal City Planner Bill Fruhling tracked the feedback by photographing the chalkboards every day. While some suggestions came in the form of elaborate drawings or public service messages, the chalkboards contained several visions from the community on what they would like to see in the reconstructed space. City officials also urged citizens to tweet at #StateStMall and share what they think should change. The following is a list capturing some of the most interesting ideas from both tweets and the chalkboards on changes to Library Mall and the 700 to 800 blocks of State Street.
- Lawn chairs/benches
- Newer, “prettier” clock
- Little Free Library
- Phallic statue
- More shady spots
- A gorgeous new St. Paul’s University Catholic Center
- Art sculptures and fountains
- No bikes allowed
- Food gardens
- Ice skating rink
- Cool archways
- More grass, less pavement!
- Utilize space wisely
- Flowers
- Chocolate fountain
- Places to sit
- No more construction
- “I like the fountain, that should stay”
- Petting zoo
- Just repair busted pavement
