Two University of Wisconsin registered student organizations — Mecha de UW Madison and Anticolonial Scientists — are under investigation and have received interim suspension notices for allegations of violating student organization codes.
The Committee on Student Organizations received complaints and media reports May 5-6 alleging members of the two groups co-hosted a chalking event that may have included discriminatory conduct. The event took place at the Dane County Farmers’ Market and the allegations state some chalkings “endorsed violence, supported terrorist organizations and/or contained antisemitic comments,” according to UW News.
Under UW’s RSO Code of Conduct, discriminatory harassment is prohibited. The reports of discriminatory conduct have not been substantiated, according to UW News, but the two organizations will remain on interim suspension until an investigation by the Committee on Student Organizations is complete.
While on interim suspension, RSOs are prohibited from conducting organizational activity except for one executive board meeting per week. The interim suspension also prohibits the use of university spaces, per the RSO Code of Conduct.
