The Student Judiciary of Associated Students of Madison has accepted a petition to hear a case with regard to the council’s March 29 meeting due to potential violation of Wisconsin open meeting laws.
Two members of ASM have brought suit against the student council, claiming the body voted on official business after 11:59 p.m. The body voted on the contentious divestment proposal during the March 29 meeting at 12:01 a.m.

The petitioners are Stephen Chang and Omer Arain, two student council members with the respondent being student council.
Arain said it is important they abide by their own laws and Wisconsin state laws as a student government.
“Simply ignoring violations of [the] laws is unprofessional and damages the integrity and legitimacy of ASM,” Arain said.
The case is set to be heard Saturday.
