An Associated Students of Madison’s committee heard Thursday from the Greater University Tutoring Service on why the group should receive student segregated fees.
The group is requesting $143,915 for this year, down from $148,762.06 last year in part due to underspending in previous years.
In the 2013-2014 fiscal year, GUTS received $174,068.20, but only spent $126,540.51, co-director Alice Reznickova said, with all leftover money returned to ASM. Reznickova said the underspending was due to some unused positions that stemmed from recruiting limitations and difficulty predicting work hours in advance.
GUTS will be cutting down their budget across the board except for their printing budget, co-director Andrew Mangham said.
“The 2013-2014 year we underspent badly,” Mangham said. “This was in part due to the turnover of Alice and I, and in part by the fact that online tutoring was not as developed.”
Mangham said in the past GUTS’ tutors and directors did not fully use their resources, but the present staff is now looking to capitalize on all future opportunities.
Rep. Erin Harper asked why GUTS is planning on cutting its marketing budget if it expects increased demand from students. Mangham responded they are trying to stay efficient with current resources and become more flexible.
Reznickova said the budget decision will be made Monday, Oct. 13 for the fiscal year 2015-2016.
