MPD seeks persons of interest in State Street shooting

The Madison Police Department has launched an investigation after responding to a call that shots were fired outside a State Street restaurant and bar New Year’s Day.

According to an MPD incident report, two people were injured, but it is unclear whether they were injured in the shooting or a sudden exit of people from Frida’s. Their injuries were non-life threatening, the report said.

MPD spokesperson Howard Payne said there are also two persons of interest,
Ronald Rice and Darnell Martin, who may have information about both the disturbance and the shots fired.

“I believe that alcohol and being in a bar setting contributed to this situation,” Payne said.

Payne said there were shots fired on New Year’s Day throughout the city in nearly all Madison districts.

According to Payne, there are no suspects as of yet in the majority of Sunday’s shootings. The latest development as of Tuesday is the information of both Rice and Martin as persons of interest.

“We hope we can speak with one of those parties to move forward with the investigation and possibly make an arrest,” Payne said.
