University of Wisconsin Colleges and Extension Chancellor David Wilson will make the transition this summer to Maryland to become the president of Morgan State University.??
Following an extensive search-and-screen process, Wilson was chosen from 106 applicants. According to a statement from Morgan State University, Wilson will replace President Earl Richardson, who resigned after 25 years on staff and will continue serving as interim president until Wilson’s presidency begins.?
Wilson’s position will not begin until July 1, allowing the UW System time to conduct their own search-and-screen process for Wilson’s replacement.?
Although a timetable has not been set for when the search will begin, it will be very similar to the process used to hire Chancellor Biddy Martin, said David Giroux, UW System spokesperson.
The process begins with a search committee comprised of students, faculty and staff from the institution who then work toward finding potential candidates and recommending finalists.??
The group of finalists are then brought to UW and given time to interact with the community. The Board of Regents and current chancellor then make a decision ultimately, Giroux said.?
Wilson has served as chancellor for three years and has become heavily involved in the UW community.
“It’s a big loss for Wisconsin,” Giroux said. “He is a very dynamic individual, has a great personal story and loves to travel around the state, leading people and spreading word about the Wisconsin Idea.”
Wilson has proven throughout his time as chancellor to be a very energetic and creative leader by always taking the extra initiative, said Teri Venker, executive director of University Relations, who worked closely with Wilson.?
Although saddened by this loss, Venker added Wilson is expected to lead the Morgan State University community with the same vigor he has shown during his time at UW Colleges and Extension.
“With his passion for making higher education accessible and affordable to all, and his depth and breadth of leadership experience, Morgan State University and the state of Maryland are gaining a tremendous asset with David Wilson,” Venker said.
