A man robbed Greenbush Bakery on Regent Street Saturday night, showing a knife to an employee before fleeing on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.

According to a Madison Police Department report, police responded at approximately 7:35 p.m. Saturday night to the armed robbery at 1305 Regent St.

Sgt. Jason Ostrenga said the time of day and circumstances of the robbery are not typical.

“Its definitely surprising,” Ostrenga said. “It was a busy day, and it was a game day. It’s surprising (the robber) choose that day for the robbery.”

According to the report, the suspect is a white male in his 20s, with a thin build, brown hair and blue eyes wearing a turquoise shirt.

Ostrenga added it does not appear this is part of any kind of crime spree.

The robbery at the bakery sparked some surprise from an elected official and a nearby resident.

Ald. Julia Kerr, District 13, has the Greenbush Bakery within her district. She said crime is not very frequent in the area.

“Regent Street doesn’t see a lot of strong armed robberies, and it’s (the robbery) disappointing,” Kerr said.

Nicole Taylor, a University of Wisconsin junior, resides near the bakery on Orchard Street. She said she saw three police cars respond to the scene.

Taylor said she generally feels safe in the Greenbush area. As she lives on the bottom floor of a house, safety was a concern when she moved in.

She added she knew the nearby Open Pantry Food Mart has been robbed in the past, so she knew some crime had occurred in the area.

Taylor said this robbery will not change her behavior substantially, as she has always been careful and practiced safe habits such as not walking alone.

Another recent robbery in the surrounding campus area occurred Thursday night, when a man robbed a 16-year-old male using a knife at Van Hise Avenue and Elm Street.

Anyone with information is urged to call Madison Crime Stoppers at (608) 266-6014.
