Associated Students of Madison is looking for University of
Wisconsin students to fill more than 100 open positions for next fall.
ASM?s Shared Governance Committee will be hiring ?upwards of
115? students to fill positions on dozens of UW committees, according to Shared
Governance Committee Chair Jeff Wright, a UW senior.
Wright said the role of the Shared Governance Committee is
to fill the seats available for student representatives on most UW committees,
including the Athletic Board, the Financial Aid Committee and the Dean of
Students Advisory Board.
He added state statute mandates students are allowed to have
a say in matters relating to student life, which covers committees all across
campus.
?Students get a huge say in how the university is governed,?
Wright said.
According to Wright, the Shared Governance Committee decided
to move the appointment process to spring this year so new student members can
join their committees right at the beginning of the semester.
In the past, the process has not begun until the fall and
student members have not been able to join their committees until October or
November, giving them a late start with their duties.
UW graduate student and ASM project assistant Travis Weller
said these seats are very important for the student body and are great learning
opportunities for students who accept the responsibility.
?These committees and boards make substantive decisions
about all aspects of campus life,? Weller said. ?You can have literally a seat
at the table.?
Wright said he is confident ASM will have no problems
filling all the openings, adding they succeeded in filling every seat this past
fall. According to Wright, ASM even intends to leave seats open on some select
committees so incoming freshmen can have the opportunity to get involved.
According to Wright, all students are eligible to apply. He
said anyone who is interested can go to www.asm.wisc.edu and click the sidebar link to the
Shared Governance Committee under Grassroots Committees to fill out the
application.
Applications are due by 5 p.m. March 31.
?We?ve got a break coming up, and I?m confident we could
potentially fill all of our seats,? Wright said.
He added all applicants will be interviewed on either April
7, 9, 15 or 17, and terms for appointees will run from fall through the
following summer.
Weller said students should apply if they would like a great
chance to gain experience and knowledge serving on committees related to their
areas of interest. He added it is a good idea to have a goal in mind and a true
interest in improving the campus if you want to get hired.
?We really prefer students that are engaged, that will
represent the students? interests,? Weller said. ?Those people seem to do the
best.?
