UW names assistant dean of students, two associate law deans

The University of Wisconsin named three new deans last week. Lori Berquam will take the position of assistant dean of students and two law professors, John Kidwell and R. Alta Charo, were named associate deans for the law school, according to university communications.

Students who stayed recently in Lakeshore dorms will be familiar with her style of residence-hall discipline. Berquam, who spent the last seven years as assistant residence life director for the Lakeshore area, will move into the Dean of Students office and act as chief judicial officer, managing the university’s response to student misconduct issues.

Berquam was looking forward to dealing with a broader group of students, the release said.

“Lori has depth of judicial experience that’s essential for a chief judicial officer at this institution,” said Jean Chagnon, associate dean of students. “She also brings organizational development skills that will make her a wonderful advocate for students and a vital member of our leadership.”

Both new law deans have exceptional experience at UW.

Kidwell has been on staff since 1972 and is the co-author of a national casebook on contract law. Charo has published more than 75 titles on various legal topics. She has been a member of the faculty since 1989.

Charo replaces Peter Carstensen as associate dean for faculty research and development while Kidwell succeeds Thomas Palay as associate dean for academic affairs.

The former chief judicial officer for the dean of students was Janice Sheppard, who moved on to an administrative role with UW Systems.
