Authorities remain stumped over the identity of a man found dead in Lake Monona Thursday.
“It’s still under investigation,” Madison Police Department sergeant James Acre said. “We’ve not identified the body or the circumstances [of the drowning].”
The body was discovered in approximately 10 to 15 feet of water by the Dane County Sheriff’s dive team during a training session.
The dive team was swimming from a hole in the ice about 50 feet away from Monona Terrace. The diving instructor, from Diversions Scuba of Madison, was swimming toward shore when she found the body on the bottom of the water.
Authorities said the body was easily visible in the clear water and was right in the path of the divers.
An autopsy performed Friday revealed no evidence of trauma, Dane County coroner John Stanley said, but the man’s death is consistent with drowning.
Tests to determine whether alcohol or drugs were present in the man’ s body at the time of his death are still in progress.
“[The tests] take some time to complete,” coroner Pete Thorpe said. “I would guess probably a month before they get the toxicology tests back.”
The autopsy did not reveal when the man died.
The body found was an Asian man, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and 103 pounds with dark, medium length hair. He had a hooked right eyetooth and a tattoo of a small blue dot on his left hand.
He was dressed in a blue-and-white-striped polo shirt with a yellow collar and dark pants, a black leather belt and black shoes. He was also wearing a UW-Green Bay Phoenix basketball MCC Champs ’96 T-shirt.
Authorities are currently investigating whether the man attended UW-Green Bay or UW-Madison.
“We don’t have a lot to go on right now,” Thorpe said. “I haven’t gotten any tips.”
Authorities request anyone with information pertaining to the identity of this man to contact the Madison Police Department at 266-4275.
