Saturday, April 25, marks one of the most anticipated days of the year for Badgers: Mifflin. Whether you’re counting down in excitement or sort of dreading it, this guide is here to help you make the most of the day. As a senior at UW, I’ve had plenty of firsthand experience, and if there’s one goal to keep in mind, it’s this: balance endurance with fun.
Choose the right shoes
This one’s at the top of the list for a reason — your shoes can truly make or break your Mifflin experience. Go for a comfortable pair and, I can’t stress this enough, that you’re okay getting dirty. Mifflin is notoriously muddy, so while it might be tempting to wear your favorite shoes, you’ll be much happier in a pair you don’t mind getting a little (or a lot) ruined.
Wear layers
Saturday’s weather is shaping up to be pretty nice for Mifflin — 50s and 60s, maybe even some sun. Still, layers are your best friend. You’ll want options as the day goes on, so dress in a way that lets you adapt. Pants with a short-sleeve top, or the reverse, is a classic and reliable move.
Avoid balconies
Nothing good happens on high balconies at Mifflin. Or maybe it does — but it’s definitely not worth the risk. Trust me, those balconies were not built with Mifflin-level enthusiasm in mind, and staying on solid ground is always the smarter choice.
Plan a bathroom spot
One of the most underrated pieces of Mifflin prep: know where you can use the bathroom. Figure out which bathrooms you actually have access to ahead of time, and don’t count on random houses to save you. Your future self will be very grateful.
Don’t rely on your phone
Your phone will not be your friend at Mifflin. Between spotty service and a street packed with Badger gear, texts are more wishful thinking than communication. Do yourself a favor: either set a meeting spot in advance or commit to sticking together. Once you’re separated, finding your friends becomes an impossible scavenger hunt.
While I can’t say I’ve mastered the art of Mifflin, hopefully these tips will help you make the most of your day. Remember the two most important tips of all: have fun and stay safe!
