Wisconsin salvaged its weekend series at Alaska Anchorage, skating back from a two-goal deficit to earn a point with a 3-3 overtime tie on Saturday night. It was the first overtime game of the year for UW and the third overtime game vs. the Seawolves in the last four games at Sullivan Arena.
UAA took the first lead of the game for the second straight night when Dallas Steward scored his third goal on the year just 34 seconds into the game.
He tipped in a shot taken from the point by defenseman Eric Lawson. Wisconsin waited until the 14:48 mark to answer Steward when rookie Alex Leavitt took a feed from Kent Davyduke to beat Seawolf netminder Chris King gloveside.
After a turnover at neutral ice, Davyduke gained control of the puck and, with a pass to Leavitt skating in on King, assisted on the game-tying goal. The first period ended with the game knotted at 1-1 with UAA having a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal.
The Seawolves took back the lead at 4:14 of the second period when Steve Cygan’s shot trickled past Badger goaltender Scott Kabotoff.
That lead was extended to two goals when Dan Gilkerson put his team up 3-1, just minutes later at the 7:34 mark. Senior winger Matt Hussey then scored the first of his two goals when he converted on a turnover at neutral ice.
Hussey skated around two UAA defenders and, with a shot from the slot, beat King top shelf. That unassisted goal was the sixth of the season for Hussey. He answered that goal with a game-tying tally at 14:18.
Davyduke dug the puck of the corner and passed it up to Winchester, who hit Hussey again in the slot. For Hussey, it was his second two-goal game in the last seven games and his fifth goal in that same span.
The remainder of the game was scoreless. In the extra session, King and Kabotoff each made one save.
The Badgers were whistled for just four penalties and the Seawolves three as both teams were scoreless on the power play. On the weekend, the UW blanked UAA on six power-play attempts.
