Last night, “Grey’s Anatomy” followed an episode structure
similar to that of Fox’s “24.” The episode depicted Dr. Meredith Grey working
an hour in the emergency room (ER), in real time and how much is possible and
can change in 60 minutes.
While Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) was getting comfortable
with a nurse in the on-call room, Meredith struggled to keep five patients
under control: one with chest pain, one with a stroke, a drunk man with a knife
in his head, a young boy with a broken femur, and Loretta Devine reviving her
character as Dr. Richard Webber’s (James Pickens Jr.) wife, with a broken
wrist.
Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) has a decision to make when Dr.
Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) asks her to be the godmother of her future baby.
Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) starts to get more comfortable with Dr. Lucy
Fields (Rachael Taylor) after they had a rough introduction in last weeks’
episode. Finally, Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) gets dating advice from her
“husband,” Henry Burton (Scott Foley).
It was an interesting episode to watch as it gave perspective to
the struggle of one doctor trying to balance numerous patients, while for some,
it’s their hour to take a nap, eat a snack, or have even have sex. When
Meredith was not busy, Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) was injecting
fertility treatment into her to help improve their chances of a pregnancy, but
it looks as though next week these drugs could have an affect on Meredith’s overall
medical performance.
