You know the words from the song Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell, “You don’t know what you got ’til it’s gone”? That’s exactly how I feel about Toppers Pizza. I was forced to uproot my wonderful college life in Madison to do a tax accounting internship at a company in the Northern Chicago suburbs this semester. Sadly, there is not a Toppers within a 75-mile radius of where I live or work. I miss eating Topperstix — always accompanied by a multiplicity of dipping sauces — with my perpetually hungover roommate. I miss their amazing deal of one medium pizza and a triple order of Topperstix for only $15.99, which fed me for days and was perfect for any college student’s budget. I even miss the odd choices of recordings you can choose from to occupy you before your phone call is answered. (Of course I’d rather find out the capital of Bulgaria than listen to Toppers advertisements!) To spare you of my own witty analogies, I will once again express my unfulfilled desire for Toppers Pizza through the song lyrics of someone much more talented at the written word than I: “You can’t always get what you want…”
