Playboy.com featured Madison?s Kollege Klub as its March “Bar of the Month.”
The KK, with its reputation as the hotspot for fast-running UW athletes and high-speed hook-ups, has been spotlighted by the magazine in the past.
“We were featured back in ?96 as (one of the) top 100 college bars,” said Ryan Hubner, manager of the KK. “We got contacted by the person who runs the website, and we sent them some pictures.”
Hubner also said the KK appreciates the widespread publicity received through such a venue.
Playboy features a different college bar from around the country each month, highlighting establishments known for free-flowing alcohol and sexual energy.
“Why do you think the KK is so popular with the frat boys and jocks?” Sara, a communications major, told Playboy. “The girls go down quicker than the drinks.”
Though frequent patrons of the bar said this statement may be exaggerated, others agreed it is not terribly far from the truth.
“Depending on who you are [the women can be easy],” UW senior Brandon Finsterwalder said. “There are a lot of athletes there, so there are a lot of groupies there.”
However, athletes are not the only patrons who try to get in on the action.
“Unfortunately, I am neither a frat boy or a jock; but even the rockers can get some too,” said C.J. Wagner, a recent UW alumnus. “I started going there when I was about 17, so I?ve even seen some of the bartenders come and go.”
Laura Pijik, a UW junior, said she stopped frequenting the bar once she turned 21 and didn?t need the “easy access” the KK provides.
“I think that it is kind of an underage bar, if you will ? not so much now because of the [police bust],” she said. “It is just known for having a young crowd, but it?s really just a bar like any other.”
