Not-So-Celebrity Playlist of the Week

Longboarding
is a sport exploding in popularity. Numerous companies release high quality longboarding
videos online, and they are almost always set to great songs. This playlist
collects ten of the best and most unique songs from these videos.

“Horny
Hippies” – The Dodos

Utilizing
the sound of a heavy bass drum, The Dodos’ offering is rhythmic without being
too loud. When coupled with a catchy, light guitar riff, the song proves a good
match for a longboarding video. Used in the Original Skateboards video “Longboarding
My Neighborhood.”

“What
You Know (LightsoverLA Remix)” – Two Door Cinema Club

“Petter
Longboard” is a compilation of longboarding footage from across the sea, in
Norway, and it uses this upbeat song as background music. The remix intensifies
the drum and bass, and turns the Irish indie group’s hit into a song worth
dancing to.

“Raining
Hotels” – Incondite

Incondite
writes their own music for their longboarding videos. “Raining Hotels” was
written for the video “Second Story Beach,” and uses Incondite’s typical two
guitar style and plenty of repetition. More relaxed than the first two
offerings on the playlist.

“You
Are the Sun” – Of Porcelain

Little
known artist Of Porcelain was featured in a recent Loaded video, “Wu Wei.” While repetitive like “Raining Hotels, “You Are the Sun” is pieced together by
sampling various tracks, and has a unique, multi-instrumental sound.

“Dark
Side of the Sun” – Modeselektor featuring Puppetmastaz

This
song mixes electronic sounds and rap sounds to create song that needs to be
listened to with the bass high. Used in the video “Lights Out,” which has
footage of night time longboarding with blacklights and glowsticks, the song
and video work perfectly together.

“See
Waves” – Nice Nice

Two
riders from Landyacthz longboard filmed their race tour of South America and
set their compilation, “Skatecation” to this interesting song. “See Waves” uses
an interesting rhythm, distorted vocals, and numerous unique sounds to produce
a stand out song worth listening to.

“Tickle
It” – Mocean Worker

Funky
and cheery, “Tickle It” creates a nice groove with a repetitive bassline and
then adds some flair with a perfectly matched muted trumpet playing sweet riffs
above it. “Of Troglodytes and Men” features the song with equally slick footage.

“Sunday
Arak (Featuring Dana Leong) – Balkan Beat Box

Think
of “Sunday Arak” as a combination of the mixing style of “You Are the Sun”
along with the funky sound of “Tickle It,” yet more relaxed. Set to rider James
Kelly weaving around tight hairpins in California, the song provides the
perfect contrast in his video “Flipping the Switch.”

“Next
In Line” – Dead Letter Circus

For
those who want a heavier song, this song from Dead Letter Circus lines up perfectly
with “Radelaide Part 2,” from the riders at Rayne Longboards. Quickly strummed
guitar chords with heavy distortion provide an epic background for great
freeriding footage.

“Good
to Sea” – Pinback

Rounding
out the list, Pinback’s offering is closer to a conventional four-piece rock
song, but maintains a mellow sound and a nice, steady rhythm. Used in the video
“Fall Longboarding in Illinois,” “Good to Sea” acts as the perfect audio
backdrop for the tricks lines of Original Skateboards’ junior team.
