Grey’s Anatomy “Shock to the System” recap

In the most recent
Grey’s Anatomy episode, characters are still trying to recuperate from the
shootings of last season’s finale. To recap the end of last season, the husband
of a previous patient wanted justice for his wife’s death and brought a gun
into Seattle Grace Hospital. Although his original intent was to kill Derek
Shepherd, his wife’s doctor, he shot many members of hospital staff and
traumatized numerous others.

           In
response to the shooting, the characters are all reacting differently. In each
episode everyone is making small strides forward with their life. Alex Karev
(Justin Chambers) has until recently declined to have the bullet removed from
his chest as a result of the shootings. However, Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra
Wilson) refuses to let him perform surgery until it is removed. At the end of
the episode, Dr. Bailey herself, removes it from his chest.

           Arizona
Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) has decided to move-in with Callie Torres (Sara
Ramirez) to help further develop their relationship. Meanwhile, Dr. Richard
Webber (James Pickens, Jr.) resumes his post as Chief of Surgery when Dr. Derek
Shepherd decides he no longer wants to carry the burden. The protagonist and narrator
of the show, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) is struggling to come clean to Derek
about the baby and the miscarriage, but finally tells him the truth towards the
end of the episode.

           Of
all the characters involved with the shooting, Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh)
appears to have been most affected. After having a panic attack one day in the
emergency room and being admitted to the psychology unit, Lexie often receives
looks for being “crazy.” However, when ambulances bring in a flag football team
hit by lightning, she makes an important discovery in one of the patients,
eventually saving the young girl’s life. She is making every effort to prove to
others she is not crazy. Dr. Mark Sloan (Eric Dance) is also struggling to hold
his feeling back for Lexie and decides that he wants to propose to her, but
struggles to find the appropriate time to ask.

           Cristina
Yang (Sandra Oh) and her mental recovery from the shootings is the main focus
of this particular episode. Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) and Kevin McKidd (Owen
Hunt) believe that getting Cristina back into surgery will help her recover
best. Teddy has her placed on her service, with a previous patient of Dr.
Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington), who has a serious heart condition. However,
during the operation, medical equipment is knocked over sending Cristina into a
panic attack on the floor scared. Only after Meredith arrives Cristina is able
to calm down and get off the floor.

           The
relationship between Cristina and Owen is heavily tested in this episode. After
the couple was married in the first episode of the season, they have now made a
formal commitment to each other. Last season, Owen was struggling with horrors
of the war, but Cristina stayed with him during his dark time. Now after the
shooting, Cristina is suffering from terrors and want to run away. However,
unlike Burke, Hunt won’t let Cristina go because he knows they have a passion
for each other and wants to support her during her struggles. In next week’s
episode we will see how Hunt, Meredith, and the rest of Seattle Grace responds
when Cristina no longer want to be a surgeon.
