Glee’s premiere sets the stage for the season

Fox’s musical-comedy
television series Glee returned for its second season last night. After Kurt
(Chris Colfer) was hit in the face with a slushy not even five minutes into the
show, the members of New Directions returned to the school year still mocked
for their involvement with the club and still considered what many audiences
would describe: g(l)eeks.

             Ready
for a fresh start, the club begins the search for fresh voices hoping to go
from a “small rebel force to a giant wall of sound” as Mr. Schuester (Matthew
Morrison) explains. Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn (Cory Monteith) dedicate
themselves to finding new talent, leading to two new discoveries.

           In
the locker room Finn discovers Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet), a fellow football
player with a great voice who later performs Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire” with
the other male members of Glee, all of whom are pleased with his performance.
Rachel also tries to recruit Sunshine (Charice Pempengco) a foreign exchange
student from the Philippines but suddenly becomes jealous after hearing
Sunshine’s voice. Rachel begins to worry she will no longer be the center of
attention.

             After
a devastating football season the previous year, McKinley high school receives
a new football coach: Shannon Beiste (Dot Jones). To improve the program,
Beiste requires more funding which is consequently taken from the Glee Club and
Cheerio’s funds. As you can imagine, Sue Sylvester wasn’t pleased leading to an
immediate rivalry between these two power women.

           The
show also introduced other numerous changes: Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) broke off
her relationship with Artie (Kevin McHale)to pursue an affair with Mike Change
(Harry Shum Jr.). Finn is kicked off the football team, Santana (Naya Rivera)
has plastic surgery done, and Quinn (Dianna Argon) is restored as captain of
the Cheerios.

         While
Sam Evans decides not to audition for the club out of fear of losing his spot
on the football team as the new quarterback, Sunshine performs an excellent
rendition of “Listen” from the Broadway musical Dreamgirls. She earns a spot on the team but is quickly recruited
by Vocal Adrenaline for her voice.

           While
the show has been known for greater performances, this first episode laid down
a lot of groundwork for future episodes. Next week Glee puts on another special
episode featuring music all from Britney Spears focusing majority of the show
on Brittany (Heather Morris) a favorite character among all Gleek audiences. It
will be interesting to see how all the changes between characters will affect
the storyline of the show in the future.
