The University of Wisconsin men’s soccer team proved their potential once again this year as they battled No. 4 Indiana University into double overtime, before capturing a point from a 0-0 tie.

The game was for sole possession of second place in the Big Ten behind No. 1 University of Maryland and with the tie, the two teams remain knotted in second. The shutout draw also keeps the Badgers unblemished at home this season with zero losses at McClimon Soccer Complex.

The Badgers riddled Indiana with an onslaught of strikes in regulation, outshooting the usually high-scoring Hoosiers 17-7. The Badgers’ junior offensive-trio of Tom Barlow, Mark Segbers and Chris Mueller accounted for twelve of those seventeen shots, but couldn’t find the back of the net for the winning dagger.

The overtime periods went back and forth with both teams trading offensive charges and defensive stops. At one point, the Hoosiers had four straight corner kicks, but the Badgers’ defense stepped up and prevented any promising opportunities.

The Badgers’ defense has been a mainstay for them this season, regularly posting shut outs and giving the offense opportunities to secure wins. The draw at home gives goalkeeper Phillip Schilling his seventh shutout of the year and puts himself in the conversation of one of the best goalkeepers in the conference.

With their recent success, the Badgers have put themselves in a great position to compete for the Big Ten title and go far into the postseason. With a 1-1 tie against ranked Michigan State University, last week’s overtime loss to top ranked University of Maryland and now their toe-to-toe battle with Indiana, the Badgers have shown that they are able to compete with the best of the best in the conference and in the nation.

The continued dominance this year is all the more impressive considering the team’s depth with so many underclassmen. All of this is coming off of last year’s five-win season and a preseason ranking of seventh in the Big Ten. The Badgers have defied expectations up to this point but are not done yet.

The Badgers resume play on Tuesday at home against Western Illinois University at 7 p.m.
