REUTERS — The owner of the Washington Capitals was suspended for one week and the team fined $100,000 by the NHL Wednesday over an altercation with a fan.
The disciplinary action was announced after the NHL investigated a run-in between owner Ted Leonsis and the fan, Jason Hammer, at MCI Center after the 4-1 loss to the visiting Philadelphia Flyers Sunday.
The Washington Post reported witnesses said Leonsis shoved Hammer several times in the concourse of the arena.
During the game, Hammer, 20, taunted Leonsis with a sign and joined a group of other fans in chanting derogatory comments at the Capitals owner, the newspaper said.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced the disciplinary action after a briefing on the incident by NHL security.
“I am fining the Washington Capitals $100,000 and suspending Ted Leonsis for one week, during which period he is to have no contact with the team,” Bettman said in a statement.
“We have made it clear that NHL personnel need to do everything possible to avoid a confrontation with fans, and the failure to do so is not acceptable.”
Leonsis released a statement apologizing for the incident.
“It never should have happened. I remain committed to being an accessible owner. Jason and I have had a discussion and will continue to speak because we both are passionate about the Capitals,” Leonsis said.
Hammer said he and Leonsis had mended fences.
“I would just like to put the incident behind us. What happened is in the past,” Hammer said in a statement.
“Ted and I have spoken and we are moving forward.”
