Track picks up NCAA qualifying marks

The University of Wisconsin men’s and women’s track and field teams wrapped up competition Saturday at the Mt. SAC Relays.

The Badger women picked up three NCAA regional qualifying times in the 1500 meters. Senior Bethany Brewster finished second in 4:19.80 while junior Hilary Edmondson was fourth in 4:21.92. Redshirt freshman Linsey Blaisdell was 21st with a personal best of 4:30.69.

For the UW men, redshirt freshman Brent Boettcher recorded a regional qualifying height in the high jump, finishing seventh at 6 feet, 9.5 inches.

Wisconsin picked up two eighth place finishes in relays with the 4 x 100-meter relay crossing in 41.42 and the 4 x 400-meter relay finishing in 3:15.17.

Redshirt freshman Rick Bellford finished ninth in the triple jump at 49.5 inches while junior Jon Mungen finished 10th in the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.47. Junior Gustin Smith finished 21st in the 100 meters in 11.09.

Redshirt junior Jvontai Hanserd finished 14th in the 400 meters in 47.93 seconds and was also 16th in the 200 meters in 21.56 seconds. Redshirt sophomore Scott Hogseth finished 23rd in the 400 meters in 48.70 while Dustin Rabine was 29th in 49.34.

On Friday junior Hilary Edmondson claimed the 800 meters in an NCAA regional qualifying time of 2:08.66. Four other Badgers also finished among the top 17 finishers — freshman Tara Halls was 13th in 2:13.59; sophomore Linsey Blaisdell was 14th in 2:14.01; redshirt freshman Katie Kolpin was 15th in 2:14.23; and sophomore Alissa Bennicoff was 17th in 2:15.21.

Senior Julie Stefan finished second in the triple jump with a personal best of 40 feet, two inches. Her distance qualifies her for the regional. Senior Tara Clack also finished second in the pole vault at 12 feet, 5.5 inches.

Freshman Melissa Talbot finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in a regional qualifying time of 1:01.18 and also finished 17th in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.94.

Wisconsin placed three in the top 10 of the high jump with sophomore Antonia Schulze-Borges tying for fifth at 5-5. Freshman Danielle Ohmen and junior Angie Kolanko tied for ninth at 5-3.

The Badgers finished seventh in the 4 x 100-meter relay in 48.41 and placed two in the top 12 in the shot put. Redshirt sophomore shot-putter Courtney Bauer finished 10th at 45 feet, 10 inches, and freshman Jamae Gjermo was 12th at 45 feet, 8.5 inches.

The Badger men competed at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Friday and redshirt freshman Rick Bellford won the triple jump at 48 feet, 6.75 inches.

Senior B.J. Tucker made his track debut with a third-place finish in the 100 meters in 10.78. Tucker was also a member of the third-place 4 x 100-meter relay. He teamed with Jvontai Hanserd, Levonne Rowan and Gustin Smith to finish in an NCAA regional qualifying time of 40.69. Smith also finished 11th in the 100 meters in 10.97.

Redshirt freshman Brent Boettcher tied for third in the high jump at 6 feet, 8.75 inches, while freshman Zach McCollum tied for seventh at 6 feet, 6.75 inches.

Freshman Wes Ulfig tied for sixth in the pole vault at 15 feet, 9 inches.

In the 110-meter high hurdles, junior Jon Mungen finished sixth at 14.54 seconds and redshirt freshman Paul Check finished 22nd in 15.21.

Freshman Joe Conway finished eighth in the long jump at 23 feet, .75 inches, while freshman Joe Detmer finished 16th in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.44.

The Badgers placed two athletes in the top 18 of the 800 meters, with redshirt freshman Ben Gregory finishing 10th in 1:53.39 and redshirt sophomore Dustin Rabine finishing 18th in 1:54.42.

At the Mt. SAC Relays, senior Ryan Ridge finished 18th in the 800 meters in 1:51.26.
