Badgers shut out Panthers

MILWAUKEE — The Wisconsin women’s soccer team closed its four-game road trip with a 1-0 win over

UW-Milwaukee Sunday in Milwaukee. The Badgers finish the past two weekends on the road with 3-0-1 record and improve to 7-5-3 overall.

“Being on the road two weekends in a row kind of got to us today,” coach Dean Duerst said. “But in the end, the team is doing what they need to do to get the result. It was nice to get a quality shutout.”

Senior keeper Kelly Conway anchored the Badgers defensively with five saves in her third shutout of the year. The Badgers out-shot the Panthers 10-7, but UWM held the advantage in corner kicks, 7-4. The UW defense held fast, clearing out most of the Panthers’ corner kicks and Conway made a save on a shot after one corner, UW-Milwaukee’s best chance to get on the board.

“We really kept the intensity up,” Duerst said. “We didn’t give them a lot of chances at all.”

Wisconsin had several chances to get a couple goals on the day, but proved that one would be enough with the shutout. Sophomore Amy Vermeulen, who tallied an assist Friday night, scored her second goal of the year at 12:47 to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead. Senior Jess Wolff played it into Vermeulen who turned to beat a defender. From 18 yards out, Vermeulen nailed a low line drive into the right corner. It was Wolff’s first assist of the season.

UW’s leading scorer Jenny Kundert tallied three shots on the day. Panthers’ keeper Mary Duffy made a one-handed diving save to stop one of Kundert’s shots, a similar shot to Vermeulen’s goal.

The Badgers resume Big Ten action at home this weekend, facing Ohio State Friday at 5 p.m. and Penn State Sunday at noon. The weekend features UW soccer double headers at the McClimon Soccer Complex, with the men’s team following the women’s team on both days.
