Madison, WI — The University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team plays a 36-game regular-season schedule in 2001-02, highlighted by a home series against defending NCAA champion Boston College on Nov. 2-3, and the 13th annual Bank One Badger Hockey Showdown, Dec. 27-28, at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee.
The Badgers open their season at home on Oct. 19-20 against first-time opponent Wayne State in a two-game non-conference series. League play begins the following weekend (Oct. 26-27) as the UW travels to North Dakota facing off against the Fighting Sioux in the first WCHA series to be played in the new Engelstad Arena. The WCHA home opener for the Badgers is Nov. 2-3, when the 2001 NCAA Champion Boston College Eagles come to Madison for the first time since January of 1989.
In holiday action, Wisconsin takes part in the ninth annual College Hockey Showcase on Thanksgiving weekend, travelling to Big Ten rivals Michigan State (Nov. 23) and Michigan (Nov. 24). The annual event which features the hockey powers of the Big Ten — Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota and Wisconsin — started on Nov. 26, 1993. Over the Christmas holidays, the 2001 Bank One Badger Hockey Showdown will be contested in Milwaukee’s Bradley Center with this year’s field made up of league rival Colorado College, Hockey East member New Hampshire and Brown University from the ECAC.
The 28-game conference schedule features home-and-home two-game series against Alaska-Anchorage, Denver, Minnesota, Minnesota-Duluth and North Dakota and two-game sets versus Colorado College, Michigan Tech, Minnesota State and St. Cloud State. The Badgers don’t travel to St. Cloud State or Michigan Tech in 2001-02 and Colorado College and Minnesota State will not make appearances in Madison.
One exhibition game will be played on Tues., Jan. 29, 2002. The UW hosts the French Olympic Team, the first time a Badger team has played against a French hockey squad.
