Flarup And Doherty Named Directors

Tamara Flarup, long-time Director of Women’s Sports Information at the University of Wisconsin and Justin Doherty, an Associate Director in the Men’s Sports Information Office at UW-Madison since 1994, have been named to new positions in the Athletic Department.

Flarup assumes the newly created position of Director of Website Services, in which she is responsible for managing the daily editorial content of the department’s website (www.uwbadgers.com), plus helping to increase traffic to and implementing new applications for that site. Flarup, who will continue to handle sports information duties for the women’s basketball and men’s and women’s golf teams, will identify and put into practice emerging technological advances for information distribution such as E-news services and webcasts of media conferences.

Flarup, who began her career as Women’s SID at Kansas in 1976, will receive her 25-year award at the College Sports Information Director’s of America (CoSIDA) convention next week in San Diego. She has been the Director of Women’s Sports Information at UW-Madison since 1977, where she supervised media services for all intercollegiate women’s sports. Flarup has served on CoSIDA’s Board of Directors since 1998 and served on numerous committees for that organization. She has been a member of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament Media Coordination Committee since 1995.

Doherty has been promoted to Director of Sports Information where he is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the office and coordinating media coverage for the Badgers’ 23-sport athletic department. Doherty will also handle media relations, publicity and player promotion for the Badger football team. He will supervise credentialing and media areas for Badger home football games and will represent the Sports Information Office at both the conference and national levels.

At Wisconsin, Doherty has handled media relations tasks for the men’s basketball team, including the school’s march to the 2000 Final Four, and assisted with similar duties for the football squad. He was previously Director of Sports Information at North Dakota for two-and-a-half years before coming to Wisconsin. He was also assistant SID at Northern Michigan (1990-92) and served as the primary media contact for the Wildcats’ 1991 NCAA champion hockey team. Doherty, an award-winning publications editor (from CoSIDA), is nearing completion of a Master’s Degree in journalism at UW-Madison.

Additionally, former women’s publicity associate Diane Nordstrom will maintain similar responsibilities for the volleyball, men’s and women’s track and cross country teams. Nordstrom, an 11-year veteran of the UW Athletic Department, will coordinate all publications needs for the division.

Julie Kluge, a full-time Assistant SID for men’s hockey the last 11 seasons, will continue in that role while adding duties with the men’s and women’s tennis teams. Kluge will also be in charge of academic nominations and publicity for academic award winners.

Sports Information Assistants Brian Lucas and Paul Capobianco will be media contacts for the men’s basketball and women’s hockey teams, respectively. Lucas assists Doherty with football publicity as well.

Former Director of Men’s Sports Information Steve Malchow will supervise the Sports Information and Website areas after being named Assistant Athletic Director for Communications earlier this month.
