Jason Gay, a sports and culture columnist for The Wall Street Journal, will return to his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin — his self-proclaimed favorite place on Earth — to deliver the keynote address at the university’s Spring 2025 Commencement. The ceremony, honoring all bachelor’s, law and master’s degree recipients, will take place May 10 at Camp Randall Stadium.

Gay graduated from UW in 1992 with a degree in political science and has since built a career as a writer, editor and humorist.

Jay was also previously chosen as UW’s Winter 2019 commencement speaker.

“Badgers don’t come more passionate than Jason Gay,” Chancellor Jennifer L. Mnookin said in the announcement. “He’s taken his UW–Madison degree and become one of the most celebrated columnists and writers in the country.”

Known for his wit and heart, Gay’s career began at the Vineyard Gazette covering Little League games. He’s written and edited for GQ, Rolling Stone and the New York Observer. Gay has also authored two books, including the Thurber Prize-nominated “Little Victories” and, most recently, “I Wouldn’t Do That If I Were Me.” He’s been honored multiple times as Sports Columnist of the Year, most recently in 2024, according to the announcement.

Gay’s love for UW runs deep — from half his wardrobe consisting of red and white to columns like “Badgers Must Beat Michigan to Save the World.” Even before big decisions, Gay said he still asks, “What would Barry Alvarez do?”

“I’m honored and humbled to join this commencement celebration,” Gay said. “This is a day to celebrate UW-Madison students and their families, and I can’t wait to be there.”
