The first day of spring semester classes was interrupted when the Madison Fire Department was called to the Humanities building at 11:09 am.
The fire alarms had been set off and the entire building was evacuated, UW spokesperson Meredith McGlone said.
“There was a failed bearing in an elevator in the building, the center east elevator, which primarily serves the art department,” McGlone said. “So the equipment began smoking.”
The smoking equipment set off the fire alarms and the fire department responded. They realized there was no fire and issued an all clear for students and staff to reenter the building, McGlone said.
The elevator will remain offline until it is repaired, McGlone said.
