Wisconsin Democrats announced the launch of the “Ways to Help Minnesota” section of their website Jan. 30, which offers resources on mutual aid and contacts from the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party of Minnesota, according to a press release from WisPolitics.
The Wisconsin Democrats introduced the new webpage in an effort to “stand in solidarity with impacted communities” through accessible resources, mutual aid efforts and information to help citizens take action. Webpage resources include details on how to contact members of congress and stay connected with the DFL of Minnesota, according to a WisPolitics press release.
The webpage comes after protests continue in Madison against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in the Twin Cities and across the U.S. Thousands of University of Wisconsin students and community members participated in a protest Jan. 30, which started with speeches on Library Mall followed by a march down State Street to the Capitol.
The webpage includes links to local mutual aid resources, food relief and GoFundMes for those affected by ICE operations in the Twin Cities. As well, the page links further Wisconsin Democrat resources which inform viewers on what rights they have if they come in contact with ICE operations in their neighborhoods.
The page also includes details on how to get involved with Wisconsin Democrats’ events in the state.
“I think it’s great to see us come together like that here in Madison for our neighbors across the border,” Chair of the College Democrats of UW-Madison Ty Schanhofer said. “There are a few times I’ve seen Library Mall so packed and I just think that’s a good thing, to see us coming together in solidarity. However, we can help and stand with them. That’s I think a great thing.”
College Republicans of UW-Madison did not respond to a request for comment.
Demonstrations have continued in Wisconsin and across the country in solidarity with organizations in Minneapolis against ICE operations in the city, which have resulted in the deaths of two U.S Citizens. These protests come after the killing of Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse who was fatally shot by Border Patrol officers when trying to use his cellphone to record an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis, according to the Associated Press.
Pretti’s death added to backlash against the Trump Administration’s ICE tactics after the death of Renée Good, a writer and mother, who was fatally shot by a U.S. ICE officer in Minneapolis earlier this January, according to the AP.
“As Minnesotans mourn and demand accountability in the wake of ICE’s deadly actions, Wisconsin Democrats stand with our neighbors,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Devin Remiker said in a press release. “Standing with our neighbors — it’s what we real Wisconsinites do, and we will not waver in our support of Minnesota.”
