University of Wisconsin students were notified Thursday evening via WiscAlert that classes taking place Friday are cancelled in response to extreme cold. Cancelled classes include all lecture, lab and discussion sections, and questions are to be directed to instructors, according to the announcement. 

An extreme cold warning was issued beginning Friday at midnight and lasting until 1 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Wind chills are expected to be as low as 35-42 degrees below zero, according to NWS. 

There is also a cold weather advisory beginning at 1 p.m. Friday and lasting until noon Saturday with wind chills as low as 20 to 29 degrees below zero, according to NWS. 

Campus buildings, including University Housing, the Wisconsin Union and food services, will remain open during their regularly scheduled hours, and all UW athletic events are expected to be held, with employees expected to report to work, according to the announcement. 

According to the announcement, students should be aware of frostbite, limit outdoor exposure, dress appropriately and utilize the Madison Metro for transportation.
