Spotlight on Student Orgs

Madison Area Jugglers

A team that’s been throwing things at each other since the mid 1990s, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Area Jugglers can be spotted in the background of the majority of the parades in town.

There is no experience necessary to join, and as long as it stays warm, Madison Area Jugglers member Elliot Kaplan said the jugglers will be providing free entertainment in Library Mall.

The Madison Area Jugglers can be seen in the homecoming parade, St. Patty’s Day Parade, Madfest and their annual juggling festival, which Kaplan said is one of the biggest in the Midwest.

Parades are the groups only community service activity, which Kaplan said is the most popular part of the Homecoming Parade.

UW Water Ski and Wakeboard Team

Since 1999, the only thing that’s stopped the University of Wisconsin Water Ski and Wakeboard Team is ice on the Lake Mendota.

Whether you’re getting up on the water for the first time, barefoot skiing or trick skiing in tournaments, Mark Ehlers said the team is a great outlet for students to enjoy themselves on the water. Anyone can join the group, no matter how much or how little experience one has.

“We’ve pulled people and gotten people up for the first time ever,” Ehlers said.

With tournaments every weekend, Ehlers said the team is on a hot streak – winning all four tournaments including Regionals so far.

Eagle Claw Kung Fu

The Eagle Claw Kung Fu club has been teaching students of all skill levels traditional martial arts techniques since the late 1990s.

One third of the group’s teaching is stretching and conditioning, another third is martial arts techniques and the final third is self defense.

However the club not only develops physical strength, but also helps students develop a stronger sense of self. The club teaches students to keep a cool head in confrontational situations, which President Joshua Sanchez said is a service to the community.

The club participates in tournaments such as the Midwest Regionals, which were held in Madison in 2009, where multiple members received medals.
