Police responded to the 100 Block of State Street around 2:15 a.m. Sunday to a report of a man having been stabbed.
Upon their arrival a man approached Madison Police Department officers claiming to have been stabbed. The officers then observed what appeared to be a stab wound, the police report said.
The 26-year-old Madison man was then transported to a local hospital where the report states he remained in stable condition.
Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, who represents the area in which the incident took place, said he was briefed by MPD who said they were called to a disturbance near Frida Mexican Grill.
By the time police had arrived on the scene, the perpetrators of the crime had apparently fled, Verveer said. Police said the victim’s injuries were non-life threatening, though they did require numerous stitches.
Verveer added Frida’s operates as a nightclub on the weekends and regularly draws in a sizeable crowd, though MPD could not yet confirm that any of the parties involved in the incident had been in the establishment prior to the event.
Though it is unknown whether the parties were in any way involved with Frida’s, and Verveer was confident this incident alone would not prompt any substantial changes in enforcement in the area, he added further incidents of this severity could bring the area under scrutiny by MPD and city officials.
“In all the years Frida’s has been in business, they’ve never had any incident on the scale of this,” Verveer said. “They handle their security very well, and have never been the focus of significant enforcement.”
The incident remains under investigation and there are no available leads as to the identity or even descriptions of the suspect or suspects involved.
Verveer said he hopes the incident is an isolated one, and pending further information concerning the incident and its details MPD will act accordingly to apprehend the suspects and address the motivations of the crime.
As of press time, representatives from MPD were unavailable for comment on the incident.
