Man fires shots near Capitol

A man opened fire on the 100-block of West Main Street early Saturday morning and is still at large, according to the Madison Police Department.

MPD Sgt. Cindy Mierow said the department received two calls at 1:30 a.m. and arrived at the scene within 30 seconds. The first officer on the scene said there were nearly 100 people on the street, 10 of whom were involved in a fight.

Police at the scene said there were no serious injuries, and Mierow said Madison residents should not be concerned about the gunman. "I don't feel anyone is in danger," she added.

Lorreine Jones, who was at the scene, said the fight started inside Adair's Lounge and moved onto the street, and then a man shot roughly six times in the air and fled. Jones described the gunman as a black 5-foot-11-inch male with braids, roughly 225 lbs, wearing a green and yellow coat, blue jeans and white shoes.

According to Mierow, at least a dozen police units blocked the intersection of West Main and South Fairchild streets, where the incident occurred.

"We're looking for one person, and at this point we haven't caught anybody," Mierow said.

According to Mierow, the 100-block of West Main Street has no history of similar incidents.
