The upcoming purchase of Steve Brown’s Private Residence Halls by FirstWorthing could bring a number of changes to the private dorms in coming years, least of which would be a number of serious renovations and the possible addition of several expensive living amenities.
According to FirstWorthing’s website, they claim, “[M]ost of our campus apartments also feature amenities that are not found anywhere else … like high-speed Internet connections in every bedroom, fully-furnished homes, study rooms or business centers, fitness centers, tanning beds, basketball courts, and sand volleyball courts.”
The Texas real-estate company runs student apartments in a number of states, including Texas, Louisiana, California and Florida. FirstWorthing executives visited Madison last week to scout Brown’s property before they will reportedly sign the final contract to buy the Private Residential Halls.
When FirstWorthing bought the apartment University House on Alafaya, a complex that houses students from the University of Central Florida, assistant manager Crystal Garvis said they poured a large amount of money into the property to conduct major renovations. In addition to adding a new 24-hour fitness facility, FirstWorthing also installed carports and provided a shuttle transporting students to campus every 15 minutes.
But physical alterations would likely not be the only changes FirstWorthing would bring to the private dorms. The company also has a history of working out innovative arrangements with those universities whose students they house, according to Ald Mike Verveer, District 4.
“They actually enter into these agreements with their would-be competition — that being the [public] dorms — to share the programming staff and life staff, like RAs and housefellows,” Verveer said.
