As the November election reaches its climax, a new group is taking a unique approach to register young voters.
Votergasm, based out of Brooklyn, N.Y., is sweeping the country with the intention of “increasing voter turn out … and turn-on,” according to the group’s website.
Michelle Collins, a founder of Votergasm, clarified the purpose of the new organization.
“Votergasm.org is a non-partisan, nonprofit organization that seeks to reverse two disturbing trends in American society: low voting rates among young people and unacceptably low rates of youth sexual activity,” she said, adding students could easily become involved with the body democratic. “At Votergasm.org, visitors register to vote, learn how to host or locate election-night Votergasm parties, and sign the Votergasm pledge to have sex with only fellow voters for the next four years.”
While the Votergasm campaign has found its way onto many college campuses, its founders have a deep connection to Madison, according to Collins.
Two of the eight founders are University of Wisconsin alumni and another attended high school in Madison, she said.
The Votergasm webpage has already had more then 100,000 hits and 6,000 pledges, Collins revealed.
“There are approximately 30 parties planned all over the country and the number is growing daily,” Collins exposed. “Young people can make or break this election, and we believe that this idea of getting laid is the best lure.”
Erica Gary, member of UW’s New Voters Project, applauded Collins’s efforts to get young people to vote.
“While I support any effort to increase the voter turnout for people ages 18 to 24, I think that Votergasm is approaching the situation much too passively,” Gary said, adding the New Voters Project provides registration and mobilization.
Gary said she believes that peer-to-peer communication is ultimately much more effective than Votergasm’s seductive techniques.
“Studies have shown that young voters don’t register because they simply aren’t asked to do so, ” she said.
However, both organizations have developed a method for following up with their registered voters.
“Because our potential voters are from all over the nation, we will be emailing and making phone calls to everyone who registered through us,” Collins said.
Because the New Voters Project has a branch on UW’s campus, the group is able to complete an aggressive and competitive plan of action. On Election Day, the New Voters Project offices will have a list of all the UW students registered through the organization and will call the students and ask if they have already cast their ballot.
“At 4:00 p.m., we will be executing the ‘drag and grab’, which is when we actually go to voters’ houses and ask them to come to the polls,” Gary noted.
With all the public action to increase Election Day turnout, Collins flirted with the idea to take the solemn attitude out of voting.
“We’re attempting to make voting sexy again,” Collins said. “Voting in today’s world seems like such a serious thing. We’re just trying to make the process of getting to the booths and getting laid easier.”
