State Street record store robbed at gunpoint

An unidentified man robbed Sugar Shack Records, 513 State St., shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday.

Lt. Cameron McClay said no arrests have been made and the robbery is still under investigation.

The man entered the store and flashed a black handgun to obtain an undisclosed amount of money, according to police reports. He fled the store with the money and was last seen running toward the Capitol on the 500 block of State Street.

Gary Feest, manager of the Sugar Shack, said there were seven customers in the store when the man entered and walked to the back of the store, but only one customer remained when he approached the cash register.

“He looked around and thought he could get away with it,” Feest said. “My employee said he smelled alcohol on the guy’s breath.”

Feest said the man pulled out a gun without a word and the employee immediately opened up the cash register.

The suspect has been described to police as a thin, 6-foot-1 black male in his mid-20s with a buzz cut, no facial hair and a light complexion. He was last seen in a red hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Feest said Sugar Shack records has not been robbed in its 21 years on State Street.

“My thought is that this was a robbery of opportunity,” Feest said. “I always thought we were pretty safe here because of all the people around.”

He said a recent robbery by knifepoint at a corner grocery store is evidence of a growing trend in armed robberies in the area.

“People are getting more brazen,” he said.

McClay said robberies on State Street are rare.

“They are fairly unusual due to the heavy pedestrian traffic on State Street,” said McClay, who added he had no idea why Sugar Shack would be a target for robbery.

Anyone with information regarding the suspect can call Crime Stoppers at 266-6014.
