Train hit student

UW-Madison student Daniel S. Smith, 21, sustained minor injuries Tuesday after crashing into a train engine at the train crossing at 600 W. Washington Ave.

“I feel fine now,” Smith said, after spending five hours in University Hospital. Smith said he has no major injuries but did suffer some cuts to the wrists and face.

According to the Madison Police Department, at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, a Wisconsin and Southern engine, not towing a train, approached the crossing with warning bells activated. The flashing lights at the intersection were also functioning.

Although witnesses said other cars stopped, Smith’s vehicle collided with the engine at approximately 35 mph and rolled over.

Smith was transported to University Hospital with unspecified head injuries described as not life threatening. He was issued traffic citations for inattentive driving and failure to wear a safety belt.
