Mehlhaff showing off for the big boys

TAMPA (MV) — With nine ticks left in the third quarter, we have our first field goal of the day, courtesy of Wisconsin's Taylor Mehlhaff, moving the score to 21-17, in Tennessee's advantage.

Mehlhaff has been booming kickoffs all day. And while it was a short field goal here at the end of the third quarter, he put enough foot into it for the ball to clear the receiving net and make its way into the stands.

Scouts have been around all week, examining various young men on both squads, but Mehlhaff has been a consistent topic of conversation in the NFL framework since Wisconsin arrived in Tampa. Professional place kickers are a relatively small group — each team only retains one — but if Mehlhaff has ambitions of playing on Sundays, he is turning in precisely the sort of performance he needs to impress the scouts.
