Note that Bush’s lead in the national polls doesn’t directly translate to victories at the level of the battleground states. Even so, Bush clearly has his second wind and is doing better than he has for months. The nationwide distribution of the two candidates’ supporters means there’s still a lot of volatility in the battle for electoral votes, which in the end is the only battle that matters.
