Spring is fast approaching, and if you’re anything like me, your wardrobe needs a full revamp. But fashion shouldn’t come at the expense of the environment — instead of reaching for a quick fix with fast fashion, try these five stores to shop sustainably this spring.
St. Vincent de Paul Dig & Save Outlet
One of the most affordable options for fashion is St. Vinny’s Dig & Save — but be prepared to work for it. Priced by the pound, Dig & Save is one of the best value thrift stores you’ll come across. A trip to St. Vinny’s involves being elbow deep in giant bins of old, often questionable clothing items for hours on end — but after sifting through the dirt, you’ll almost certainly strike gold (for a price usually ranging from a few cents to a few dollars!) Visit the Park Street location for some casino-like shopping.
Plato’s Closet
If you don’t have enough time (or dedication) on your hands for a trip to Dig & Save, try the Madison West Plato’s Closet. This more organized thrift store isn’t quite as inexpensive as St. Vinny’s, but it’s certainly still affordable and a much more relaxing, efficient environment to find your new spring staples.
St. Vincent de Paul Store
If you’re looking for another St. Vinny’s that’s a little more consistently reliable, head to Willy Street. This location is full of great finds almost every time, and you’ll get plenty of bang for your buck without having to dig through any bins.
ReThreads
ReThreads is home to plenty of unique, vintage styles that are sure to spice up your closet. While on the pricier side, ReThreads is conveniently located right on State Street, making it easily accessible without a car unlike most other thrift stores in Madison.
Goodwill
When in doubt, stick with the classics. Goodwill may not be the trendiest thrift store out there, but it’s a trusty option when you need some affordable, classic staples. Head to either the Nakoma or Monona locations for some good finds.
This spring, stay off Amazon Prime and try your luck with Madison’s thrifting scene — sustainability and style go hand-in-hand!
