Well, it is time to face the music: we’re back at school. The weather is harsher, the days are shorter and yes, it is still only syllabus week. When the cold air hits your face, it physically hurts, and deteriorates any glimmer of hope that was left after opening the weather app only to see it’s negative 8 degrees. Hoping classes get cancelled? Not an option. So, how else are you going to survive the semester if not by learning a few good tips right here, right now? Gearing up to go outside feels like preparing for battle, so it’s time to find cozy activities that can be done indoors.
Bundle up
First and foremost, we must get over the hump of wearing a parka. At first, I thought that no one would be wearing one and I’d look like an absolute idiot. Turns out, practically everyone is, or at least sporting a bulky winter coat of some kind. I don’t know why bundling up felt embarrassing but it’s not. I couldn’t tell you why I felt a sense of shame putting on gloves, but I can tell you not to make the same mistake.
Hot beverages
One of my little joys has been hot chocolate. I have a box of thirty instant packs sitting on top of my fridge at my leisure, and I recommend you do the same. It’s just comforting to sip on some cocoa in the evening — it makes doing your homework a little bit easier and the snowy weather a little more aesthetic. Get in the mood and power through those readings!
Puzzling
Now, it’s time for a fun indoor activity because the five minute walk to your club meeting almost took you out. Over break, I got really into doing puzzles. I know that might sound totally lame and boring, but don’t knock it until you try it. You can really get into it and feel productive upon completion. Plus, you could listen to a podcast or watch a show alongside.
Remember to socialize!
Most importantly, though, stay connected. Don’t lose touch with your friends just because you don’t feel like walking a block and risking frostbite. Think of this as a chance to make new friends, if you’re not yet familiar with your neighbors. Every night, my friends in my dorm and I gather in one room to just hang out and watch a movie, and it keeps me going.
Lots of showering
Let me leave you with one last tidbit that I find quite funny, but could honestly work. My wonderful roommate says she feels “cold in her bones,” and has showered twice a day this entire week just because she’s cold. If you need to warm up, a shower is healing, even in the dorm water.
Anyways, stay safe out there! Every time I step outside I hold my breath and pray that I don’t slip and fall on my face in front of everyone (…again). Make sure to take care of yourself — it’s only syllabus week.
