40 years of The Badger Herald
One of the Herald’s founders, Nick Loniello, discusses the unique origins of the paper, along with Katy Culver and members of the current staff. Forty years later, the Herald is still going strong, defying even the founders’ expectations.

The Badger Herald debuted in fall 1969 as an alternative voice on campus. Born to cover and combat the turmoil of the Vietnam protests, the Herald maintains its maverick spirit, though it has shed the “alternative” reputation.

Today, we are the largest fully independent daily campus newspaper in the nation. As always, we receive no funding or other assistance from the university in publishing 15,000 issues five days a week and maintaining this website. We are supported by advertising and powered entirely by students. We take great pride in reflecting the tastes and perspectives that are unique to students on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

The Herald strives to present objective news, entertaining sports and arts coverage and insightful editorial stances that reflect the interests and tastes of UW-Madison’s student community. In the process, we also hope to train the next generation of student journalists for success in any of life’s paths.

We are a family, dedicated and enthusiastic. As we pursue our goals, we invite you to join us by writing a letter, purchasing an ad, applying for a job or just taking the time to read the paper, online and off.

History

The Badger Herald published its first edition in 1969 amid a flurry of campus protest and national controversy. Times have changed, but the Herald has retained its renegade spirit. Read “A brief history of The Badger Herald.”

Fall 2009 staff

We employ more than 60 talented individuals, as well as dozens of contributers. These are dedicated souls; many work full-time hours while attending school. View this semester’s staff list.

Colophon

The Badger Herald is produced for print and web in a third-floor office on Gorham Street in downtown Madison. Hardware, software, words, images, code and a lot of hard work combine each night. Learn how.

Job opportunities

New positions are opening up all the time. We hire writers, editors, photographers, web developers, salespeople and managers — to name a few. View current job openings at the Herald.
