It’s midday on a Tuesday, and University of Wisconsin students are getting their first glimpse of warmth in months. Colectivo’s lines are out the door, the lakeshore path is full of life and the student community is alive on campus is alive.
A second-semester junior at UW Amanda spoke to us at the Badger Herald regarding the refreshing weather Wisconsin has experienced lately. “It’s great,” she said. “I’ve missed the fresh air — it’s nice to get outside and appreciate nature.” When prompted to delve into what exactly her day of enjoying the weather entailed, Amanda said she’d be “doing homework on the State Street Brats patio,” along with 99% of the student population.
“I can focus better with a hard cider in my hand,” she continued. “I think there’s been a study on that or something,” There has not been a study on that.
Amanda’s close friend and roommate, Mia, chimed in as well — unprompted. “It’s like, I’m having fun and I’m doing work. I’ve only been here for like four hours and I’ve already read like five pages.”
From our reporters’ brief observation of the Brats patio, we noted several open computers — all directly in line with the sun to entail no visible words. All students sitting on the wooden benches respectively wore jean jackets and sunglasses. The phrase “did you know it’s going to be 20 degrees on Monday” was stated a whopping 16 times in the 30 minutes our team spent observing the area.
40% of students surveyed doing homework on Brats patio answered “no” when questioned: “Did you complete at least one single assignment?” 20% of men sitting outside wore short sleeves and a t-shirt, while the other 80% claimed they didn’t check the weather and wore a full winter jacket and hats.
Our insiders tell us Brats patio is potentially soon to ban Macbooks at their Madison location, claiming it makes the establishment look as if it’s a branch kept alive only by students involved in Greek life minoring in business analytics. This is a live coverage story, more to come.
