U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, R-Wis., announced in a video on X that he will be running in the upcoming Wisconsin election for governor Sept. 23, according to Politico. Tiffany represents Wisconsin’s seventh congressional district and is a vocal supporter of the Trump administration, according to Politico. His campaign goals include lowering costs, restoring order and preparing kids for success, according to Tiffany’s campaign webpage.
The 2026 election comes as current Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers announced in July that he will not be running for reelection, according to Wispolitics. Tiffany joined businessman and former Navy SEAL Bill Berrien and Washington County Executive Josh Schoemann in the Republican field of candidates, according to Politico.
“We are hosting Josh Schoemann next week, and look forward to what he has to say. Both Tiffany and Schoemann are competent conservative statesmen who would lead the state in a better direction,” Co-Presidents of UW College Republicans Courtney Graves and Ben Rothove said in an email statement.
Wisconsin College Republicans announced their endorsement of Tiffany’s campaign yesterday, following his announcement.
Tiffany has been a loyal supporter of Gen-Z and his conservative voting record in congress is one resonating with students, according to a press release from Wisconsin College Republicans.
As Wisconsin is considered a swing state, if someone from a certain party is elected, that could be a predictor of future election results as a whole, such as the presidential election, according to UW freshman and political science major Elizabeth Falcone.
Since the current governor is stepping down, there is guaranteed to be change in Wisconsin, Falcone said.
“No matter what happens, something new is going to happen in the next election,” Falcone said.
Tiffany’s election could give the Republican Party an edge in Wisconsin and the next presidential election if elected, according to UW freshman and political science major Sylvia Nyggard. If elected, that would be a pivotal moment for Republicans and give them more of a majority, Nyggard said.
According to Tiffany’s campaign announcement video, he is a critical candidate of current Wisconsin leadership.
“Tom Tiffany is the best choice for governor. His record of leadership as a state legislator and member of Congress is precisely what Wisconsin needs,” Rothove said.
