Last stand for soccer seniors

[media-credit name=’GREGORY DIXON/Herald photo’ align=’alignright’ width=’336′]MS_10_GD[/media-credit]Following a rare letdown this past weekend, the Wisconsin men's soccer team (9-5-2, 3-1-1 Big Ten) looks to get back on track as it takes on a strong UW-Green Bay side (11-5-0, 5-2-0 Horizon) at 6 p.m. tonight at the McClimon Soccer Complex.

After having its momentum snapped in a 1-0 loss to No. 19 Northern Illinois Sunday, Wisconsin will have to battle back and overcome a little pressure to regain that all-important confidence as the team heads into the final stretch of the season.

"Obviously, I think losing [Sunday], dropping that game, certainly puts some added pressure on the game [tonight]," Wisconsin head coach Jeff Rohrman said. "With only a few games remaining on our schedule before tournament play, we're certainly eager to rebound and get back into our winning ways."

Prior to Sunday's loss, the Badgers were nearly unstoppable for a long period of time, losing only one match in nine contests and recording six shutouts. During that span, the Badgers also climbed to the top of the Big Ten table, knocking off Michigan, Northwestern and Penn State, while sharing the points with Michigan State in a 0-0 draw.

Though UW-Green Bay just lost two straight Horizon League matches, dropping a 1-0 game to UW-Milwaukee and losing 2-0 to Illinois-Chicago, the Phoenix had an equally impressive run of matches this season, winning 10 of 11 and outscoring their opponents 30-11 during that stretch.

As Wisconsin looks forward to its showdown with Indiana for the Big Ten title this Friday, Rohrman is quick to remember the game at hand and is making certain his team is eligible for an at-large NCAA tournament bid should they not receive the automatic bid with a Big Ten Tournament crown.

"Green Bay is a quality side, and we're going to have to perform pretty well to beat them," Rohrman said. "It's a huge regional game, and it's going to be important for us to get a win and position ourselves for an at-large bid if we don't win the Big Ten tournament."

If the Badgers are to have any success against the Phoenix, they'll have to shut down UW-GB's offensive trio of senior Josh Okoampa, junior Dan O'Brien and sophomore Tosaint Ricketts — all of whom have provided significant contributions to the Phoenix's 36 goals this season.

"Josh Okoampa is probably the main threat up top," Rohrman said. "I think Dan O'Brien, also, has put together a pretty good year. (Tosaint) Ricketts, another guy up top, is also very athletic and certainly a guy we have to be aware of. Those three guys are three dangerous attacking players, and we have to be very good defensively with those three for sure."

Despite allowing a goal in Sunday's loss to Northern Illinois, the Badger defense has been rock solid in 2006, leading the Big Ten in goals per game allowed and shutouts. Principal to that defense has been senior goalkeeper Jake Settle, who earned his third Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honor recently after recording his ninth shutout of the season.

As the Badgers host their final home match of the season tonight, the team also honors its seniors for all their contributions over the past few years. Those honored for Senior Day include Settle (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Hamid Afsari (Whitefish Bay), William Bagayoko (Baton Rouge, La.), Andrew Cardona (Waukesha), Aaron Hohlbein (Middleton), Frank Iaizzo (North York, Ontario), Matthew Jelacic (Brookfield, Wis.), and Reid Johnson (Mequon.).

While in-state showdowns often produce enough emotion as it is, being such rivalries, tonight's match will hold special significance, as Rohrman's seniors look to secure one more victory at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
