With two Justin Bieber songs in the latest Glee episode song
line-up, some fans were excited while others were turned off. However, the
episode was a nice refresher as to why this show is popular. Lessons were learned,
songs were sang, and characters developed.
When Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch no longer has motivation for daily
activities, guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) suggests she joins
glee club for excitement in her life, although Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison)
and the rest of the glee club are hesitant.
Mr. Schuester announces for regionals they will not only be
facing the Warblers, but also Oral Intensity, who beat them at regionals the
previous year. In addition, Mr. Schuester explains that the theme for Regionals
this year is “Anthem,” for New Directions to interpret in any way they choose.
Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) in a desperate attempt to hold onto
Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron), forms the “Justin Bieber Experience,” performing
“Baby” to impress Quinn, which also causes Noah Puckerman (Mark Salling), Mike
Chang (Harry Shum Jr.), and Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) to join the band and
perform a fun rendition of Bieber’s “Somebody to Love.”
However, when Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) points out to Sam that
there really is no longer chemistry between him and Quinn, especially after she
made out with Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith), Sam ends his relationship with Quinn
and starts dating Santana.
Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) is struggling to make a comeback in
the school and focus on her musical career. She recruits Brittany (Heather
Morris) to follow her fashion style so that others will follow Brittany and her
style is spread throughout the school. However, the plan backfires when
everyone gives Brittany credit for all the new fashion trends. She also
participates in a diva-off with Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley) singing a
energetic “Take Me or Leave Me” from the Broadway musical, Rent.
As Sue starts to find a little joy in glee club, she suggests
that the group perform, “Sing” by My Chemical Romance. New Directions put on a
great performance filled with emotion and pride, and the club believes they
potentially have their anthem for regionals.
Although pleased with their “Sing” performance, Rachel grows
worried that in order to have the edge at the competition this year, she
believes they should write their own songs. However, she is shut down after a
vote, but Finn tells her privately she should write her own song and present
it, and maybe she would gain more support.
After Sue enjoyed
her time in glee club, she decides to take the position as glee club coach for
Oral Intensity, now facing New Directions as competition for regionals, which
did not please Mr. Schuester.
I will be the first to admit that I was not excited that Glee was
having an episode with a couple Bieber songs, but I was surprised to find that
this episode was down-to-earth. No guest stars, I felt like I was watching an
episode that would have aired before all the hype and media got involved.
Rachel and Finn started the final song, and although they had a tender moment
at the end of the episode, it did not necessarily involved romance, the show’s
drama is starting to relax. Is Glee finally starting to calm down after all the
guest stars, themed episode, and the big superbowl episode? I certainly hope
so.
