A Fat Sandwich Company delivery driver was robbed Saturday night on the 1300 block of Chandler Street.

Just before midnight on Saturday, the 20-year-old delivery driver dropped off the food, and while he was getting back into his car he was approached by a man who demanded money, according to Sgt. Tim Radke of the Madison Police Department.

According to the police report, the suspect is described as a black male in his late teens to early 20s, 6 feet tall with a thin build, wearing a black and green hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

According to the police report, the delivery driver was punched several times in the face. However, the victim only suffered minor injuries and did not need medical attention.

The suspect ran off with the victim’s cell phone and some cash, and is still at large, according to the report.

Radke said this type of crime — the robbing of restaurant delivery drivers — has been seen in the past. Radke said calling up a delivery driver lends itself to an opportune situation for a criminal, since the criminal can determine the time and place where the victim will be located.

According to Radke, it is not known whether callers of the order were involved with the crime, and it is something the police will investigate.

General manager of Fat Sandwich Company Spencer Graham said this is the first incident involving one of the restaurant’s delivery drivers.

“This is something we definitely don’t want happening,” Graham said.

The only action that can be done is to tell drivers to practice safe habits, such as picking the right parking spots and limiting drivers to only keeping a small amount of money on them, Graham said. The restaurant also tries to make sure the delivery drivers are employees who can defend themselves.

However, Graham acknowledged limited options in trying to prevent a situation like this from happening.

“Whenever someone wants to do something like this, there is really nothing you can do about it,” Graham said.

Anyone with information is urged to call Madison Crime Stoppers at (608)266-6014.
