Two UW-Madison students were among four camp counselors who
drowned Tuesday in a swimming accident outside of Elizabethtown,
N.Y., 110 miles north of Albany.
The UW students were identified as 19-year-old Adam Cohen, a
returning second-year student from Hewitt, NY and 18-year-old David
Altschuler, an incoming first-year student from Philadelphia,
PA.
Two other counselors, Jonah Richman and Jordan Satin also died in the incident.
The four, counselors at Camp Baco in Minerva, N.Y., had been
swimming at Split Rock Falls on the Boquet River when one fell into
the water and is believed to have been swept away by currents. The other
three apparently drowned in a rescue attempt.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of two members of our campus
community,” said Dean of Students Luoluo Hong. “That they died
trying to save the life of another only makes the loss that more
tragic. Our thoughts and condolences are with their families and
friends at this time.”
Associate Dean of Students Lori Berquam said memorial services for
the two students is scheduled for Sunday, but Berquam was unsure as to
where they would be held. Friends of the either of the two students
are encouraged to contact the Dean’s office for further information
and/or counseling, Berquam said.
