Fire injures two

A fire erupted at 641 W. Main St. around 6:30 Monday night. Two residents were taken to the hospital with minor injuries and smoke inhalation, according to the Madison Fire Department. The fire started on the third floor in apartment 304. There were two people inside upon arrival of the first officers on the scene. The officers pulled one person from a smoke-filled room, and the fire department pulled another person from the apartment.

The fire originated in the kitchen due to unattended cooking. The fire did not spread; it was contained and extinguished quickly.

Residents of the building evacuated on their own because building alarms sounded. Two people were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital with minor injuries. Damage to the apartment totaled approximately $5,000.

Neighbors in apartment 303 made a call to 911 reporting the fire at 6:31 p.m., and the fire was under control by 6:40.
