Genna’s

I'm pretty sure you can judge a bar on how many embarrassing experiences you've had there — that's why the Plaza ranks so high in my book. But easily fighting for a top-five ranking is Genna's — a bar just off Capitol Square and just out of reach of most University of Wisconsin students.

With a wide selection of beer on tap and a kick-ass staff, Genna's draws a more interesting crowd than almost any bar on State Street and provides a very relaxing atmosphere.

The bar has two floors and some outdoor seating and boasts unique decor; there's even a Genna's mural next to the stairs featuring beer flowing out of a bottle. Out of the plethora of seating options, upstairs is the best place to be — it's cozy and inviting, though the bathroom may or may not need some work. I usually prop my foot cautiously against the door while inside after a few too many accidental walk-ins. Actually, a word to the wise: Instead of waiting upstairs, try running downstairs — the bathrooms next to the main bar aren't as busy and the line moves faster.

If you can score a decent table, you'll have a comfortable spot to spend the night listening to Bowie and sipping on a pitcher of Bell's. Bring friends, because it's not too loud to enjoy some healthy conversation, and you'll have plenty to talk about.

I've found Genna's is a great place to get a few drinks after dinner at The Old Fashioned or Harvest, and it's equally as good a place to end up at the end of the night.

It might be a trek for students on the west side of campus, but Genna's is well worth it for a night of relaxed dialogue and a solid brew.
